The Classics are Classic!

While SMG guides have been out putting up and scoping out  new and exciting routes we haven’t forgotten that the classics are indeed classic!  Guides, Drew and Clark have been out enjoying all that the Sawtooth’s have to offer.  The Finger, offers several quality routes, perhaps the most popular being The Book 5.8 III.  Another super classic is The Elephants Perch with the well know Mountaineers Route rated 5.8 III, and Sideline 5.9 II or 5.9 IV.  Mt. Heyburn offers two beautiful summits.  The West summit offers many options in reaching the top, the most popular being Stur Chimney.  Quality rock and aesthetic lines never go out of style.

New Route in the Pioneers: “Sky Pilot”

July 8, 2010

SMG guides Marc and Drew climbed what they believed to be a new alpine route out Wildhorse Canyon in the Pioneer Mountains. “Sky Pilot”  IV 5.6-5.8 starts at one of the Wildhorse Lakes 9238′ and climbs the northeast ridge of Peak 11,280′ to the summit. Like many of the ridge/arete routes in the Pioneers, “Sky Pilot” is characterized by generally easy climbing on good quality rock with fantastic exposure. What sets this route apart is the length: about 2000′ feet of 4th and 5th class climbing up an exposed arete! There were several short sections (30-60′) of 5.6 climbing and the boys chose a more difficult finger crack near the top that went at 5.8, but an easier option existed. The Alpine Bender continues!

July 5th Climbing at the Super Slabs

July 5th Climbing at the Super Slabs.

Another beautiful day in Redfish Canyon!

The Wards and Watkins at the Slabs

July 6, 2010

Marc and Erik climbed with Bob, Darcy, and Hana Ward, and Mitch and Linda Watkins all from Twin Falls, Idaho last Friday.  There was a dusting of

snow up high in the early morning hours, but the day was clear and comfortable, and everyone climbed to the summit via the “Central Groove” (II 5.7)!

The Slabs continue to deliver good times for both guides and clients alike!
